Dimora Villa Sofia Featured in Gala France: when a stay becomes a story of family, Sicily and authenticity

Some guests arrive, stay for a few days, and leave carrying a memory of Sicily with them. And then there are encounters that, unexpectedly, turn those memories into words.

Some time ago, we had the pleasure of welcoming a French journalist from Gala to Dimora Villa Sofia. He came to Sicily in search of authentic places, away from the island's more conventional routes.

After experiencing the house, its surroundings and its unhurried rhythm of life, he chose to tell its story on Gala.fr as part of the article “La Sicile hors des sentiers battus : 5 adresses de charme où poser ses valises” — a journey through five charming places from which to discover a different side of Sicily.

For us, reading the way he described Dimora Villa Sofia was particularly moving.

“Le plus authentique”

This is how Gala chose to introduce our home: “the most authentic.”

Not as a hotel, nor as a traditional guesthouse, but as a true family home.

Perhaps there could be no more meaningful recognition for us, because it captures exactly what we have always tried to preserve. Dimora Villa Sofia was never conceived as a hospitality property. It is a home that has belonged to our family for generations. It once belonged to our great-grandparents, then to our grandparents and, eventually, it was passed down to us.

We spent many summers here as children, surrounded by grandparents, aunts and uncles — picking fruit from the trees, seeking shade beneath the great old pines during the hottest hours of the day, and spending our evenings around the outdoor kitchen, where barbecues were prepared and bread and pizzas were baked in the old stone oven. When, many years later, we decided to bring the villa back to life, our intention was never to transform it. It was to preserve it.

A home where the past is still present

Gala captured something that is particularly important to us: almost everything inside the villa tells a story about the family who once lived here.

The wardrobes, tables, cabinets and many of the objects found throughout the rooms belonged to our great-grandparents. They have been carefully restored while preserving as much of their original character as possible. Even the visual identity of Dimora Villa Sofia was born within the house itself. Our logo is inspired by the decorative pattern of an original ceramic tile that can still be found in one of the bedrooms today.

These are small details that may not reveal themselves immediately, but together they express what we want Dimora Villa Sofia to be: a place where the past has not been artificially recreated, but simply continues to be part of the present.

Sicily, seen from the terrace

There is one place that inevitably becomes a protagonist in Gala's story: the terrace.

From here, the view stretches across the Gulf of Bonagia and the Mediterranean Sea before meeting the unmistakable silhouette of Monte Cofano.

But it is at sunset that this place reveals something truly special.

It was in front of one of these sunsets that, after many years spent away from Sicily, the idea of restoring the villa was born. Living far from the island had perhaps taught me to see Sicily through different eyes. Returning here and watching that golden light fall over the sea meant rediscovering a place that had always been part of my story.

From that moment came the desire not only to preserve it, but also to share it.

Living the house, rather than simply staying in it.

Perhaps the sentence in the article that best captures what we hope to create at Dimora Villa Sofia is the idea that here, "you feel more like a guest in a family home than someone simply renting an Airbnb".

That is exactly what we want.

And this is why the experience extends beyond the rooms of the villa. Those who wish can begin their morning with a private yoga session on the terrace overlooking the sea, or step into the world of Sicilian cuisine alongside a local chef, preparing fresh busiate, pesto Trapanese and some of the recipes that tell the story of this corner of the island.

Simple experiences, designed not to fill a holiday with activities, but to allow our guests to slow down and develop a deeper connection with the place they have come to discover.

Seeing our story through someone else's eyes

When you have known a place for most of your life, some of its details inevitably begin to feel ordinary: the sound of cicadas on a summer afternoon, the scent of citrus trees, the shadows of the old pines across the garden, the Mediterranean seen from the terrace, the changing light as the sun slowly disappears beyond the horizon.

Sometimes, it takes the eyes of someone arriving from far away to remind you just how special those things are.

For this reason, we are grateful to Gala for telling the story of Dimora Villa Sofia not simply as a place to stay, but as what we hope it will always remain: a Sicilian home, a family story, and a place to be lived slowly.
